Service credit -- or allowable service -- is the credit you earn each month retirement deductions are withheld from your salary. We use your accumulated service credit, your high-five average salary, and a formula to determine your retirement benefit.

The more service you have and the higher your annual pay, the higher your monthly retirement benefit.

A number of factors may impact your length of service such as a leave of absence, part-time employment, or working for another governmental unit. For more information, contact MSRS at 651-296-2761 or 1-800-657-5757.

Maximum retirement benefit amount

The retirement benefit will be capped at 99% of salary for employees who retire July 1, 2018 or after. This means members will earn their maximum benefit after 33 years of service. Employee contributions in excess of the cap, plus 4% interest, will be refunded to the member at retirement.
