   Survivor Benefits
If you die before terminating state service, monthly survivor benefits will be payable to your surviving spouse, and if no surviving spouse, to your dependent children under age 20. Monthly benefits payable to your surviving spouse are payable for life. If survivor benefits are payable to your dependent children, they are payable until they reach age 20, or for five years, whichever is later.

Survivor benefits are based on your high-five average salary, years of service, and age at the time of death. Please contact MSRS if you would like an estimate of the monthly survivor benefits payable from your account.

If at the time of your death you do not have a surviving spouse or dependent children, your beneficiary would be entitled to a refund of your contributions plus 6 percent interest. If you do not designate a beneficiary, your account would be payable in this order:
  1. to your surviving children in equal shares
  2. to your surviving parents in equal shares
  3. to your estate
